For the fifth year in a row, Scott County residents can drop off their Christmas trees for free this season at the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) Organics Recycling Facility beginning Tuesday, December 26, through Saturday, January 13.
In order to repurpose them into usable compost, all trees must be free of tinsel, flocking (artificial snow), lights, metal, and other non-compostable materials. Garlands, wreaths, and spruce tops free of these items will also be accepted.
The facility will be accepting Christmas trees Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., and during extended Saturday hours from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. beginning the day after Christmas through January 13. The facility will be closed on Sundays and New Year’s Day. This free program is available to all Scott County residents; please be prepared to show identification for proof of residency. Individuals who are not residents of Scott County may drop off their trees for a fee.
The SMSC Organics Recycling Facility is located at 1905 Mystic Lake Drive South in Shakopee. For more information, call 952-233-9191 or visit www.smscorf.com.
