Fatal Motor Vehicle Crash in Sand Creek Township

On May 25, 2023, at 8:43 pm, Scott County Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle crash that occurred on the 18xxx block of Valley View Drive in Sand Creek Township.

Initial investigation indicates that a 2014 Jeep Wrangler was traveling southbound on a gravel portion of Valley View Road, when the driver lost control after they navigated a sharp curve in the roadway.  The vehicle left the roadway and struck a power pole anchor cable, causing the vehicle to flip onto its side.

The driver of the vehicle (a 17-year old male from Jordan) and two passengers (a 16-year old female from Shakopee and a 16-year old male from Jordan) were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash and sustained non-life threatening injuries.  The fourth occupant (a 16-year old male from Jordan), who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

At this time, it is not believed that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

"Last night's tragic car crash, claiming the life of a young passenger who was not wearing a seatbelt, is a painful reminder of the importance of this simple safety measure,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen.  “As we enter the summer season with increased activity and more drivers on the road, especially during the Memorial Day weekend filled with celebrations and high school graduation festivities, it is crucial that we exercise caution and prioritize safety. I urge parents to have open and honest conversations with their teens about the importance of driving safely and always wearing seatbelts. Let's work together to prevent such tragedies and ensure the well-being of our young drivers and passengers on our roads."

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office was assisted in this incident by the Jordan Police Department, Jordan Fire Department, and Ridgeview Emergency Medical Services.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating this crash.  Upon completion of the investigation this case will be sent to the Scott County Attorney’s Office for review of charges.

Positive identification of the deceased, along with an official cause of death will be made by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
